Step into your harness and follow the water through a rainforest canyon. Ride two jungle ziplines, learn the ropes with your guides, then take on four waterfall rappels through the falling water.
You don’t need previous rappelling experience. You do need a sense of adventure, reasonable balance and energy for wet trails and the steep hike out. Swimming and cliff jumps are optional; getting wet is part of the canyoning experience.
Explore the experienceThis is an active day in a natural river canyon, with time to learn before the waterfall descents. Your guides set the pace and adjust the activities to weather and water conditions.
Meet your ride in the Jaco area and head toward the forested hills south of town. A Costa Rican meal starts the outing before the adventure gets under way. We’ll confirm the pickup location and time for your accommodation when you book.
Continue up the mountain in a safari-style 4×4 to the private reserve. At the top, your guides fit your helmet and harness and explain how the equipment works. The forest and river canyon become the setting for the rest of the day.
Follow the trail into the canyon and ride two ziplines over the river. Before the waterfall descents, practice your rappelling technique on dry ground. Guides explain the movements and backup system so you can build confidence before getting wet.
With your guides directing the descent and managing the backup ropes, lower yourself down the wet rock through falling water. There are four waterfall rappels along the route. The natural pools also offer opportunities to swim or try an optional jump when your guide says conditions allow.
Finish with an uphill walk back toward the truck, then take your return transportation. The hike out is about a quarter mile (400 metres), but it is steep. Keep some energy for the climb and expect wet, uneven footing along the route.
Choose canyoning if your group wants a hands-on adventure with ropes, heights and flowing water. First-timers can join with instruction, but everyone should be ready to walk on uneven terrain and hike uphill at the end.
If your group prefers a guided waterfall hike with optional swimming and jumps, explore the Explorer Waterfall Tour. For countryside riding with a waterfall stop, see the 4-hour Sutton Falls ATV tour.
